Organizing Storage Units – First Steps

When organizing a storage unit to get ready for an estate sale or just purging to make room for other items, follow these steps:

• Remove all items except heavy furniture which should be pushed to the back of the unit or positioned around the walls

• Unpack all boxes, bins, suitcases, etc

• Make use of tables, if available, to display all unpacked glassware, silver, linens, and   other displayable items

• Similar items should be grouped together and arranged in a way so that the estate company can easily assess what is in the unit

• Personal paperwork, artwork, photographs, etc. should be put into small to large bins so that the owner can determine what will be kept, donated, or destroyed

• Items such as old towels and sheets should be donated to a charitable organization

• All empty boxes should be broken down and recycled
